The Corporate Performance Pyramid
Corporate performance is a bit like a pyramid. Although the strategy may be positioned at the very peak of the structure, unless all the supporting structure is designed to support that peak, then the strategy is at risk.
Corporate performance starts at the top of an organisation to look at how focused the corporate vision is, and how strong the objectives are to meet that vision.
From there, its a process of cascading down the hierarchy – not of function, but of operational processes, activities and measures to ascertain how well the objectives are being met. Each operational value chain should start at a customer need, and end at a customer facing objective, supporting the strategy.
One very effective means of linking the strategy to the activities of the business, and measuring how well these activities are meeting strategic objectives is Balanced Scorecard. To many, balanced scorecard is a reporting tool – but to those that really understand its value, it is an effective means of implementing an organisations strategy. Once implemented, THEN it also serves as a reporting tool.
Another significant change is the way in which reporting tools are now being used. Until recently, reports were seen as a post action review system, to measure performance. Today, with business intelligence analytics, they are effectively used before decisions are made, and actions taken.
This a significant change in the way businesses are operated and managed.
