Wonderlust – A Business Weapon?

Companies should encourage their employees to day dream – about work that is. Perhaps every meeting should start with a round of “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if……..”

In many instances, employees do not contribute their creativity for fear of ridicule, criticism of not being a team player and supporting the status quo or just generally apathy. Such a suggestion illicit comments such as “new ideas are not rewarded so why bother!”….”if I stretch I am likely to wear myself out or get my head cut off!

A great example of whimsical use of technology is the Telectroscope. Planet Telectroscope was the imaginative output of artist Paul St George. The viewing contraption is presented as a tunnel connecting London and New York via a series of mirrors across the Atlantic. In reality it is a couple of webcams inside a fanciful contraption. But don’t you just love it.

It symbolizes imagination, engagement and fun, and a sense of community. It connects people in a fanciful way, just to remind us that technology is not here to separate us but to unite us across greater distances.
Even its retro design evokes a more emotive response than some brushed steel modern day design. And that’s from someone who loves brushed steel!

And of course there is an equally whimsical story to go with it about how St Georges St great grandfather started the tunnel a century ago and has only been completed this year. The story is supported by interviews, technical details, and videos.
